Access Scheme

d/Deaf & Hard of Hearing People, blind & partially sighted, disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent patrons are encouraged to join our Access Scheme so we may assist them in finding the most suitable seating. Members on the Access Scheme list may be entitled to adjustments on ticket prices.

Previously, wheelchair positions and/or Companion Card tickets for our shows were only available via telephoning the Box Office during business hours. We understand that this is not always convenient or preferable.

Please sign up to our “Access Scheme” by emailing foh@darlinghursttheatre.com with the following:

  • Your name

  • Your phone number

  • Your companion card number

  • Your access needs

By signing up to the scheme, you will be able to access wheelchair positions and companion card tickets online whenever you like.

If you have previously signed up to the scheme and wish to be removed from the list, please contact us.

D/deaf & Hard of Hearing People

Hearing dogs are most welcome at Darlinghurst Theatre Company. Patrons are welcome to take them into the auditorium and cabaret space, or alternatively can be cared for by our Front of House staff for the duration of the performance.

Blind & Partially Sighted People

Guide Dogs are most welcome at all of our performances. Patrons are welcome to take them into the auditorium and cabaret space, or alternatively can be cared for by our Front of House staff for the duration of the performance.

White Cane Users are welcome at our venue. Should you require any assistance during your visit please speak to the performance Host who will be stationed just inside the main entrance.

Free cast & creatives lists in large print are available at the Box Office for every performance.

Wheelchair users

There is a lift in the main foyer of the theatre which provides access between the entrance on Burton Street (Ground floor), the bathrooms and bar (Lower Ground) and the auditorium (Upper Ground). There are six (6) designated wheelchair positions in the auditorium.

The accessible bathroom is on the Lower Ground floor opposite the lift. There is an additional accessible bathroom backstage, next to the dressing rooms. Please see staff if you wish to use this one.

Our Box Office and Bar also have a lowered bench for easy access.

Auditorium Performances

When attending a performance in the auditorium, there are two seating options available to wheelchair users:

  • Remain in your wheelchair in a designated wheelchair space (row H)

  • Transfer to a theatre seat (aisle row H). If you are comfortable with a single step, you can also transfer to the aisle of row G.

Occasionally wheelchair users who are able to transfer to a theatre seat, are able to sit in row A (depending on the performance set requirements). Please speak to a Box Office representative if you’d like to transfer to row A for a performance.

Cabaret Lounge

Seating in the cabaret lounge is based around small circular tables and moveable chairs. For seating with the most space and direct access we recommend booking tables numbered 13 - 22.

Neurodivergent People and those with Mental Health Conditions

Earplugs

Free earplugs (3M uncorded foam) are provided at the Box Office for patrons who would benefit from them. Please help yourself to a pair from the bowl at the Box Office counter.

Pre-Show Information

Prior to each production season, there will be detailed information for each production supplied online. This will contain plot points, lighting and sound information (as well as any warnings), along with allergen warnings and content warnings and if there is any audience participation.

We understand that some mental health conditions can make it difficult to attend the theatre. If there is something we can do to facilitate your attendance please let us know.

Relaxed performance

We program relaxed performances for neurodivergent patrons or those who would benefit from a more relaxed performance. Elements of these performances include reduced lighting and sound effects, and a relaxed attitude to movement and sound throughout the performance. Patrons are also free to come and go as needed throughout the show.

Parking

There are 2 accessible parallel parking spaces at 34 Burton Street (opposite the Eternity Playhouse). They currently do not have drop kerbs however we are liaising with the City of Sydney to ensure these are installed as soon as possible.

There is limited 1-2 hour parking around the theatre on Palmer and Burton Streets. Those with a Mobility parking permit can park in those spaces for an unlimited amount of time.

The nearest parking complex is the Wilsons Parking at 70 Riley Street, Darlinghurst, which is a 6-10 minute walk from the theatre.

Rates start at $7.

Wilsons Parking is open till 10pm everyday, however you are still able to get your car out after the closing time.

Contact Wilsons Parking on 1800 727 546 or learn more here.

Near the dressing room there is 1 toilet, 1 shower and 1 accessible bathroom with a shower.
