Open Door Submissions

Open Door actively encourages submissions from artists and theatre-makers who have experienced barriers accessing a main stage theatre company. This includes those from the Global Majority, Disabled and/or d/Deaf and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Darlo stands for radical empowerment and inclusion. Our artists have free reign to take up space. To create exceptional, joyful, challenging work that leaves our audiences feeling energised and connected.

Darlo has a proud history of being programmed by open submission, by ideas that artists bring to us. The Open Door Submission call-out still keeps the doors wide open and makes the process more accessible.

We invite artists to pitch us an idea - tell us what it is and why it is exciting. We are looking for live performance of every kind - cabaret, comedy, plays, performance art, music, dance, spoken work and anything else you have thought of!

We program in consideration of our programming principles (see below).

ABOUT THE SUBMISSIONS

We want to hear an elevator pitch of an artistic idea that is stage ready. We accept submissions that are written, video or voice recordings. You can apply for one or more of the following programs: Progressive, Commercial or Independent. If you have a work that requires development investment please stay tuned for further opportunities at Darlo that will open later this year.

WHAT WE REQUIRE

  • contact details
  • a description of your artistic practice and experience
  • explanation of your idea - the artistic form, the intention behind the work, what you would like to do, who is involved
  • who it is for and why it excites you, and how it fits into Darlo’s Programming Principles
  • which Open Door program you feel it best fits into (you can indicate more than one)
  • any references you would like to share

Submissions for review 1 close on 21 July 2023.

GUIDELINES

  • Open Door submissions are open year round and reviewed by the programming team at regular intervals throughout the year. We will invite you to schedule a meeting with us if we would like to hear more about it.

  • Open Door submissions are only required to be submitted once per calendar year. Previous ideas can be resubmitted.

  • If you have not been contacted to arrange an invitation with the programming team within three months, your submission will be included in the next review. You may withdraw your submission at any time by contacting theatre@darlinghursttheatre.com.

  • The programming team will be looking for stage ready applications that align with Darlo’s five programming principles.

  • Programs designed to support artists with ideas at early-mid development stage will be released soon. Stay tuned.

  • All ideas will be received with radical compassion and kindness.

  • Darlo prioritises accessibility to opportunity. If this application process has not addressed your accessibility needs, please contact theatre@darlinghursttheatre.com and we will work to create a process that suits you.
