Introduction:

Darlinghurst Theatre Company (DTC) has been operating an innovative theatre model in Sydney since 1993, with each year seeing great progress including moving to The Eternity Playhouse in 2014. In 2020, COVID-19 brought huge challenges to DTC and the creative arts sector. It was only through the generous commitments – big and small – from over 750 donors, that we were able to work our way out of the pandemic and back into the limelight. Now, as a re-imaged and revitalised theatre company emerges, we want to acknowledge and thank those who stood by us, in an imaginative and meaningful way.

The Commission.:

We are seeking to collaborate with an artist to create an interpretation of a traditional honour wall to recognise the donors who kept our doors open in 2020. We remain open minded to what that might be – an artwork, a sculpture, a digital work or other expression of celebration. It must fit respectfully into the available heritage-listed space and provide a striking demonstration of our sincere appreciation.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company will contribute a total of $5,000 to the successful artist to cover their time and materials including creative planning, creation and installation of the finished work.

The Process:

15 June, 5pm Attend briefing

You are invited to a briefing at the Eternity Playhouse to meet with our Co-Artistic Directors to discuss opportunities and constraints within Heritage rules, and to familiarise yourself with the space. You may attend the briefing in person, over Zoom, or watch a recording of the session.

 29 June, 5pm Submissions due

Then it will be up to you to exercise your creativity and propose your idea for the work using the following link or QR code.
