Casting Call-Out: Unannounced mainstage musical production

Show Details

Darlinghurst Theatre Company is accepting video audition submissions for an unannounced 2023 mainstage production at the Eternity Playhouse. It is the Australian premiere of a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, directed by Dean Drieberg and choreographed by Brendan Yeates. Actors/Musicians can access the show title and more information via Showcast. Important Information

  • Performers must be Sydney based for the season

  • Performers will be employed under the Performance Collective Agreement

  • Performers must be over the age of 18 and fully available for the season dates

Important Dates

  • Round 1 auditions are via video submission, due on 6 February 2023

  • In-person callbacks in Sydney will be scheduled in the week commencing 20 February 2023

  • Hold: preliminary music rehearsals 6-14 May 2023

  • Rehearsals: 5 June - 29 June 2023

  • Tech + Previews: 30 June - 7 July 2023

  • Season: 8 July - 13 August 2023

  • Extension weeks (TBC): 14 - 27 August 2023

Casting Brief

We are seeking stage performers who are strong singers and strong musicians who are confident with movement. The following instruments will be played during the show:

  • Piano / Keyboard

  • Oboe

  • English horn

  • Clarinet 

  • Bass clarinet

  • Viola

  • Cello

  • Guitar

  • Accordion

  • Glockenspiel

  • Bass Guitar

  • Drums / percussion 

Performers should be able to play their primary instrument with a level of competency enabling them to play confidently with other performers as part of a band. The show itself features music of various styles including  pop, alternative rock, jazz and opera. 

We are seeking artists who can tell stories and portray characters through song. We love artists who have unique vocal sounds such as Erykah Badu, Billie Holliday, Jónsi, Sara Bareilles, Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Josh Groban, Sia or Thom Yorke. We are not solely interested in performers with theatrical experience, we would love to see people who have music performance backgrounds.

Round 1 Video Audition Requirements:

Please provide the following material:

  • Slate to camera (max. 30 seconds):

  • Please introduce yourself.

  • Please list the instruments you play and indicate the level in which you play them (basic / intermediate / professional)

  • Please let us know what musical styles you enjoy singing (e.g. opera, pop, musical theatre, etc.)

  • Please mention your level of movement/dance experience

  • Song: 32 bars of you singing in your primary musical style*

  • Song: 32 bars of you singing in another musical style (optional)*

  • Music: 32 bars of you playing your primary instrument

  • (Optional) Additional videos: You may include short videos of you playing other instruments that you can play at a professional level.

  • (Optional) Additional videos: You may include any videos that show your movement/dance skills


  • *Please note, if you play an instrument that can be used to accompany yourself singing (ie. piano, guitar, accordion, mandolin or similar) please feel free to do so. Otherwise backing track or a cappella are equally welcomed.

    Please edit your tape into one video and provide a link to an unlisted Youtube video or Vimeo link OR provide a link to a Google Drive folder containing your clearly labelled materials. Before submitting, please double check that your link isn't private and doesn't require a password or request to access.

    Please do not submit via WeTransfer or any other platform that requires us to download your tape.
