Our Country’s Good

By Timberlake Wertenbaker

From the extraordinary novel The Playmaker by award winning author Thomas Kenneally (Schindler’s Ark, The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith), Our Country’s Good takes us back to our convict past and tells the true story of the first theatrical production that was staged in Australia – performed entirely by convicts.

Sydney 1789, Governor Phillip faces the challenge of building a new society out of bitter, resentful officers, and hundreds of thieves, pickpockets and murderers. In an effort to humanise the population, bring some culture to the colony, and provide alternative entertainment to public hangings, the progressive Governor decides to stage a play.

From the company that electrified audiences with Hurlyburly and Lord of the Flies, Our Country’s Good is a bawdy, chilling and hilarious tale from Australia’s neglected history.

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Play of the Year Award
