Set in the twilight years of Franco’s Spain, I Only Came to Use the Phone follows the journey of Maria whose car breaks down on a lonely stretch of road on the way to Barcelona. She tries hitching a ride but no one stops for her. Finally a ramshackle bus full of women pulls up and takes her aboard. What follows is the stuff of nightmares. Weaving her unique expression of magical realism, director Netta Yashchin beautifully unravels this exquisite story. Thirty-six enchanting characters are seamlessly interlaced by a cast of six, who charm us with the effortless beauty of Marquez’s language. Nobel Prize winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, Colombian born Marquez published the short story I Only Came to Use the Phone in the collection Strange Pilgrims in 1992. He is now considered one of the most significant writers of the 20th Century. "The gifted cast of six (including Yashchin) showcase their versatility as they spread themselves across 36 entertaining roles...it exudes vitality and enthusiasm - ABC Online ""It’s a gripping 90 minutes trapped in Maria’s head as the silent witnesses to her plight. Uncomfortable but invigorating theatre – a fine show to come out of one of Sydney's neglected venues" - Time Out PRODUCTION CREDITS Director: Netta Yashchin |
