Life just ain't what you thought it would be.
Presented by DTC and redstardogfish
Wednesday 2 November- Saturday 19 November: Tuesday - Saturday @ 9pm, Sunday @ 7pm
If The Matrix had a love-child with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it grew up in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, the little mongrel just might be This Savage Parade.
Two lives hang in the balance. Crowded round are a host of souls, poised for the outcome. There, in the in-between, they play out fragments of lives half remembered, possibilities unexplored, and the breathtaking, expanding universe.
This is a show that engages the imagination as it embarks on a fantastic journey of the soul, from the dark pleasures of household appliances, to the very limits of life and beyond.
This Savage Parade is an original creation exploring some of the more unusual possibilities of theatre.
Mixing the whimsical with the acerbic, the delicate and transient with the cruel and crushing, This Savage Parade recruits puppets, song, and a superb international ensemble of actors in a journey of sound, text and image.
If you've realised that life is never quite what you expect it to be, and are ready for a few more surprises, come with us, and celebrate This Savage Parade.
"This Savage Parade is one of the most extraordinary pieces of theatre you will see."

THE INTERNATIONALIST
Australian premiere by Anne Washburn

A surreal, Noir comedy thriller.
Presented by DTC and the practical theatre company
Wednesday 5 October- Saturday 29 October: Tuesday - Saturday @ 7pm, Sunday @ 5pm
Lowell, an American travelling on business, is met at an unnamed foreign airport by a beautiful, mysterious colleague. They spend the night together, and he thinks he's in one of those great American movies where you go to a strange land where there's romance and adventure, and the experience makes you sophisticated.
The next day at the office, Lowell discovers that he's actually in one of those haunting foreign films where nothing is as it seems, where there is no clear plot, no moral code, and most importantly, no subtitles.
As James, a local with less than perfect English observes, " So, do you make now that you are here a lot of tourist? Or do you stay in your room at hotel and drink all of the time and order girls?"
Anne Washburn is fast emerging as one of New York's most original, provocative, and chameleon-like playwrights. A funny, eccentric, slightly surreal thriller, The Internationalist is an enigmatic comedy about the mystery of communication among people and nations. Is our sense of what really matters in life slowly being homogenised by a globalised world?
"Infused with acute dialogue and gentle menace... Washburn's scenes shiver with delicate threat and unease."
- The Village Voice, New York.
"I have decided to move Anne Washburn to the top of my list of playwrights to watch... The Internationalist is a thought-provoking study of American values in foreign lands."

MATT & BEN
by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers

Friendship isn't always about goodwill.
Presented by DTC and the afterparty productions
Wednesday 5 October- Saturday 29 October: Tuesday - Saturday @ 9pm, Sunday @ 7pm
In 1997, Hollywood hunks Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won an Oscar for the screenplay of Goodwill Hunting. But what really happened in Somerville, Massachusetts in the summer of 1996?
Matt & Ben spoofs Tinseltown's best friendship, as it imagines the story behind the bonds of two of Hollywood's most celebrated leading men. Jasmin De Main and Trilby Glover portray Matt (Damon) and Ben (Affleck) - before J-Lo, before Gwyneth, before Project Greenlight, before Oscar... before anyone actually gave a damn.
The play's premise follows the boys attempts to write a prize-winning script - no, not Goodwill Hunting, but an adaptation of J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. However, when the completed screenplay for Goodwill Hunting drops mysteriously from the heavens, the boys realise that they're being tested by a 'higher power'. Hilarity ensues, as Ben, the vacuous good-time guy, and Matt, the unbearably earnest do-right, debate whether or not to take their gift from the movie Gods and pass it off as their own.
Matt & Ben took the prize for Best Overall Production during its sold out run at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2002, and was the only play invited to appear at the HBO sponsored U.S. Comedy Arts Festival 2003 in Aspen.
"A hit! Acidic, funny and affectionate. Matt and Ben spoofs Hollwoood's best friendship."
- New York Post.
"Refreshing and absolutely delightful... A deliciously spiteful send-up."
- The New York Times.

THE YOUNG TYCOONS
World Premiere by Christopher Johnson

They had money, sex and power. It just wasn't enough.
Presented by DTC and Spooky Duck Productions
Wednesday 7 September- Saturday 1 October: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm
From the author of Dog Logs, Backpacker! and Barnesy, The Harbour and You, comes a scathing, cynical - but always hilarious - comedy about sex, money, lies, money, treachery, backstabbing, ruthlessness, money, money, money - and even a bit of true love.
Trevor and Kim are two young men on the verge of being handed more wealth, power and prestige than is commonly imaginable - but can they handle it? Or is there truth in the old adage: The first generation acquires it, the second generation builds it... and the third generation f**ks it up!
Watch and laugh as fortunes are risked, secrets exposed, unspeakable acts performed and lives ruined... and feel a whole lot better about your own position on the rich and powerful list.
Topical, scandalous, very, very funny - and soooo Sydney. Greed is the new black.
"Johnson writes like a cross between Harold Pinter and Jerry Seinfeld."

ONNA NO HONOUR
Sydney premiere by Scott Bevan

Life can be so fukoohei
Presented by DTC and Thought Uncontrol
Wednesday 10 August- Saturday 3 September: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm
Len Anderson is a raw fish out of water. The young Australian banker wanted a London posting, instead he got Tokyo. And now he's got more than he bargained for.
Len doesn't understand Japan. He doesn't understand the customs, the language, or the people - especially his very straight colleague Ryuchi.
And Len definitely doesn't understand the women, or onna, to use the Japanese word. Len has a lot to learn about onna, and honour as Ryuchi tells him. You need to get one to get the other, but which comes first? And is the answer really to be found in a karaoke bar?
Onna No Honour is a comedy that peels the mask off realtions between men and women, East and West, imagination and reality. It is a plea to never judge people by appearances. And it's a warning to never attempt karaoke before drinking!
"Onna No Honour is a hilarous play, full of comedic moments and clever puns. Despite the madnes that surrounds the kooky characters, they remain believable, lovable and most imprtantly, real to the audience." - Grace Chau, Vibewire.net
" Rasmussen captures the right balance of good-humoured insensitivity and warm hearted sincerity... Kengo Hasuo brings subtle dignity to Ryuichi... the original score by koto musician Shoko Oono is evocative, its precise sounds capturing the beauty and tension within Japanese culture." - Mark Hopkins, Sydney Morning Herald
" Bevan manages to weave an interesting tale... Rasmussen, Hasuo and Yuki all put in nice performances... the staging is beautifully done... the inventiveness is admirable." - Maz Dixon, BroadwayAustralia.com
"... we're getting close to the top end of my richter scale here. I loved it. I laughed a lot!"
- Nigel Munro-Wallace, ABC Radio Brisbane.

THE MEMORY OF WATER
by Shelagh Stephenson

How real are your memories?
Presented by DTC and Whoosh Productions
Wednesday 13 July - Saturday 6 August: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm
Voted UK 'Play of the Year' in 2001, and the winner of The Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2000, The Memory of Water is a bitter-sweet family comedy by one of the UK's hottest new playwrights, Shelagh Stephenson.
Trapped by a snow-storm in the hours before their mother's funeral, three highly disfunctional sisters endure a bickering, humorous and unsettling reunion as the grieving process brings their past into dispute, and memories compete for authenticity.
The Memory of Water elicits a true note of emotional pain and complexity beneath the ordinary surfaces of Teresa, the martyred caregiver, Mary, the classic overachiever, and the wayward daughter Catherine, as it explores the influence that parents exert on their children's lives, long after they have left.
Reminiscent of The Big Chill and Hannah and Her Sisters, The Memory of Water unerringly reveals the may ways in which a death in the family uncovers the absurdity of life.
"A memorable and enjoyable work... Baird's Catherine is a hilarious mass of dysfunction... Strehlow's Vi has a lovely, glamourous presence, offsetting a sharp and earthy tongue."
- Stephen Dunne, Sydney Morning Herald.
"Stephenson's skill for dialogue is immaculate. Her writing is sharper than Oscar Wilde waving a sushi knife... The Memory of Water is sublime"
- Craig Longman, The Program.
Featuring Jenni Baird, Wendy Strehlow, Catherine Moore, Niki Owen, Cameron Stewart & Andrew Crowley. Directed by Kim Hardwick. Designed by Jo Briscoe. Graphic design by Cam Baird. Lighting design by Martin Kinnane. Assistant Director & Production Manager: Sean Pardy.

MEET THE CANDIDATES
by Tim Bosanquet

"Delivering 90% more laughs to all Australians"
World Premiere presented by DTC and Veneer Productions
Wednesday 8 June - Saturday 2 July: Tuesday - Saturday @ 7pm, Sunday @ 5pm
Meet The Candidates is a biting, entertaining satire that does for State politics what Spinal Tap did for the rock music industry.
It's Grass Roots without the council meetings, Yes Minister without the British accents... Parliamentary Question Time with a sexual undercurrent!
From the writer of the smash-hit comedy, Simon Crean! The Musical, Meet The Candidates follows three different candidates (Labor, Liberal and Independent) as they tussle over a marginal seat in a state election. The money, the manoeuvering, the mud-slinging, and of course the men and women who make it all happen are exposed, as a political machine in full-swing suffers from a little too much lubrication over a series of events at pubs and clubs in the suburban heartland.
Dare to glimpse the inner workings of the political machine, and be afraid, be very afraid!
"A scything comedy... an entertaining evening of social and political satire." Stephen Dunne, SMH.
"I am not like the Leader of the Opposition. I did not slither out of the cabinet room like a mangy maggot..." Paul Keating on former Liberal and Opposition leader (now Prime Minister) John Howard.
"Three of the candidates were total alcoholics. I called a meeting of the candidates, after which they went down to the bar and had a few beers, and one of them threw another of them through a window... they had no plans, no money... they had no campaign at all... and by the time election night came around, we didn't win a seat. It was a total disaster." Former Senator Graham Richardson
Featuring: Coralie Bywater, Shane MacNamara, Steven Matthews and Sandra Stockley.
Directed by Michael Pigott. Produced by Tim Bosanquet and Jane Grimley. Lighting design by Ian Bowie. Lighting operation by Richard Bennett-Forrest. Set design by Katja Handt
SONGS TO ILLUMINATE THE DARK
by Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen

A journey of becoming
Presented by DTC and Strut & Fret Production House
Wednesday 8 June - Saturday 2 July: Tuesday - Saturday @ 9pm, Sunday @ 7pm
An award-winning hit at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival, Songs to Illuminate the Dark follows the journey of Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen as they waltz, tango and polka through the depths of the human soul.
Mikelangelo commands the stage with his thunderous baritone, part ringmaster, part crooner, part beast possessed - singing songs absurd, macabre and beautiful. Unfettered by time or tradition, the Black Sea Gentlemen are his travelling companions - Rufino, the spirited 'confidence man' and Violinist; The Great Muldavio, a stoic and mysterious Clarinet player; Guido Libido, the sorrowful Piano Accordionist; and Ruprecht der Schreckliche, the fearsome Contrabassman.
Together they shape a fable, at once cautionary and full of humour, hope and wonder, where contradiction gives rise to strange truth.
"A delicious cabaret of deep depression which finds humour in the impossibly bleak despair of Mikelangelo's very appealing songs... a flawless display of Gypsy-esque folk playing." - Stephen Dunne, SMH
"Darkly beguiling cabaret... a wealth of sharp and sweet musical touches" - The Sunday Herald, UK
"exuberant, faintly disturbing and extremely funny" - The Independent, UK
"This is extraordinary music. You have to see one of their shows to fully appreciate the impact this group has." - Phillip Adams, ABC Radio National
Original music and lyrics by Mikelangelo. Script and musical arrangements collaboratively devised by Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. Produced by Strut & Fret Production House and Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen.
FUDDY MEERS
by David Lindsay-Abaire

Please keep your arms and legs inside of the ride at all times.
Australian Premiere presented by DTC and Fishy Productions
Wednesday 11 May - Saturday 4 June: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm.
An irreverent, laugh-out-loud, roller coaster ride through a seething backwater of human foibles, Fuddy Meers plunges us into an extraordinary day in the extraordinary life of Claire.
Living with psychogenic amnesia means that each time Claire awakens, she must ritualistically rebuild her life from scratch, including being reintroduced to her doting husband, and somewhat less than doting, pot-head son. This morning however, Clare is awoken by a limping, lisping man, who may or may not be her brother, starting her on a journey which may well lead her into another reality entirely.
In the distorted world of Fuddy Meers, nothing is what it seems. The social misfits with their myriad quirks and afflictions who inhabit this wacky world, collide and ricochet through a chaotic, comedic who-dun-what, taking the audience on a joyous, rollicking ride into cock-eyed lunacy.
His talent blossoming through the prestigious Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program at the Julliard School, David Lindsay-Abaire has gone on to win numerous awards, from the likes of the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival and The Lincoln Centre LeComte du Nuoy Fund. Citing influences including Frank Capra and Eugene Ionesco, David Lindsay-Abaire's plays include Wonder of the World (an off-Broadway vehicle for Sarah Jessica Parker), Snow Angel and Kimberly Akimbo.
"Non-stop hilarity. Kidnapping, amnesia and oddballs make for first-rate farce!" - John Simon, New York Magazine
"Exhilarating, a wacky delight" - Entertainment Weekly
"Pee-Wee's Playhouse meets The Jerry Springer Show" - Christopher Isherwood, Variety

THE DROWNED WORLD
by Gary Owen

Beauty is now illegal
Presented by DTC and Smug Productions
Wednesday 13 April - Saturday 7 May: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm
Gary Owen is one of Wales' most successful new playwrights. Signed up by the National Theatre immediately after writing his first play (Gary's Crazy Mobile Disco), he has continued to challenge theatregoers with plays which are as fascinating as they are complex, Tackling contemporarily relevant issues with a thought provoking approach.
A vicious tale of love, revolt and beauty, The Drowned World, won Welsh playwright Gary Owen an Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award in 2002, and the 2003 Pearson Best Play Award.
The Drowned World offers a vision of a world divided between citizens and non-citizens - where physical beauty is a sign of evil, a terrible, highly contagious disease called 'radiance' - where the loved and the unloved, the pure and the corrupted, the betrayers and the betrayed, all struggle for survival.
In The Drowned World, Owen paints a frightening but timely picture of genocide and cultural cleansing, by creating an ‘us and them’ with which we can all too easily identify.
Tara’s beauty is seen a physical symptom of radiance, which can be contracted by something as seemingly harmless as touching her hair. Julian’s handsome countenance can infect simply by glancing into his eyes.
In The Drowned World, we are the imperfect ones, taught to fear, hate and destroy that which we do not have and cannot understand.
All it takes however is a moment to plant the seed of rebellion - Darren will risk his life to protect a beauty he has only dreamed of, while Kelly trained to exterminate without question, will be tempted to posses that which she has been ordered to destroy.
In The Drowned World, attraction can be fatal...
"A blazing new talent." - The Guardian, UK
"An intriguing, apocalyptic vision of a society obsessed with the skin." - The Independent, UK
"A blast of brilliant theatrical writing straight from the heart of post-modern Wales." - The Scotsman, UK

TERMINUS
by Daniel Keane

There is murder, there is sex, there is mystery.
Presented by DTC and East Coast Theatre Company
Wednesday 2 - Friday 25 March:
Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm,
Matinee @ 2pm on Saturday 19 March
From Daniel Keene, one of Australia's most acclaimed contemporary playwrights, comes a tale of the power of hope.
The last train. Inside one of the carriages is a young boy carrying a box. Several seats away, a man is sitting. He moves closer to talk to the boy. He wants to see what is in the box. The boy is not interested in showing him.
This is the beginning of a remarkable journey, which takes place at the end of the line, the terminus, in an area where hope would have died were there not room for dreams and wondering. Each and every character encountered is searching, despite isolation and loneliness, for something better.
Except the man.
He can give succour and yet finds none for himself. Both murderer and lover, he gives life and he takes it away. He changes people without being changed himself. Or does he become changed after all? Do his victims teach him something from the other side of the grave?
This is a play of subtlety, of transcendence - it takes you by the heart, and also through your mind, and it leaves you wondering. It is a work of art.
Featuring Mark Constable, Tamara Cook, Laurence Coy, Andrew Crowley, Eamon Flack, Ben Geurens, Tanya Goldberg, Tom O'Sullivan and Berryn Schwerdt. Directed by Joseph Uchitel. Produced by Sam Hawker and Dirk Melton. Designed by James Browne. Lighting design by Stephen Hawker. Original music by Max Lyandvert. Dramaturgy by Jenya Osborne.
"A performance that truly engages with the audience... the play will satisfy those who seek to be provoked rather than placated with neat solutions." Richard Black, Vibewire
"Director Joseph Uchitel's production is attentively realised and greatly assisted by Max Lyandvert's excellent sound design, James Brown's set and Stephen Hawker's lighting... the ensemble is committed and strong." Bryce Hallett, Sydney Morning Herald

Australian premiere presented by DTC and Couch & Mark
Wednesday 2 - Saturday 26 February: Tuesday - Saturday @ 9pm, Sunday @ 7pm
Envy. Hatred. Revenge . . . just your average best friends
How is it that some people can have so much going for them and other people not have anything going for them at all?
That is the question the pathologically pessimistic Holloman has for his perennially optimistic colleague Lawrence, in this deliciously dark comedy by acclaimed Canadian playwright, Morris Panych.
Lawrence and Holloman, two salesmen in a large department store, strike up an unlikely friendship. The men are polar opposites: Lawrence is confident, happy-go-lucky and extroverted; Holloman is timid and uptight.
As the friendship grows, Lawrence’s luck begins to turn. Strange accidents plague him. Why is this happening now? And just how much bad luck can one man survive?
Funnier than Friends, blacker than The Office, Lawrence & Holloman is a wicked comedy about unlikely friendships and the hazards of wreaking revenge that will have you asking: is that what friends are for!?
"Blackly humorous... Lawrence & Holloman is slick stuff indeed." - Toronto Sun
"Morris Panych's brilliant Lawrence & Holloman... a great production. Glenn Hazeldine is magnificent as Holloman." - Lenny Ann Lowe, Sydney Morning Herald
"This year's first essential fringe production has arrived." - Colin Rose, Sun Herald

Preview Tuesday 4 January
GALA NIGHT Thursday 20 January - all tix $50
Wednesday 5 - Saturday 29 January: Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 5pm.
Lord Edgar's new bride, Lady Enid, is having a perfecly dreadful time adjusting to life in Mandacrest Mansion. The portrait of Edgar's previous wife is watching her every move, as is peg-legged, randy stableboy Nicodemus, and snooty maid Jane. Even more disturbingly, a wretched fiend lurks beyond the foggy moors and mysterious beasts are circling the mansion. But the question that chills Lady Enid to her very soul, is who - or what - is Irma Vep...??
Charles Ludlam's outrageously theatrical cult classic The Mystery of Irma Vep, gleefully plunders Victorian literary classics and vintage B-grade Hollywood, from Wuthering Heights to The Curse of the Werewolf, and blends them into a monster-mash of ghoulish shenanigans. With hysterical charaters and hairpin turnarounds for two exceptional comic actors, The Mystery of Irma Vep will have you rolling in the aisles - while Bronte, Poe, Wilde and the Wolf Man roll in their graves!
"Far and away the funniest two hours anywhere!" - New York Times
"Exquisite insanity... you would be mad to miss it" - Daily Mail
"A side-splitting Gothic spoof" - Curtain Up
"A giddy pastiche of gothic cliches, a deeply silly but skillfully written comedy. It is also described by the author as "a full-length quick-change act" for good reason... Both actors are effective comic performers, and the show is a masterclass in mugging...Very amusing...An easy entertainment." - Stephen Dunne, Sydney Morning Herald
Destined to become the cult hit of 2005, The Mystery of Irma Vep is a wickedly funny and athletic show, choc-full of snappy one-liners and witty repartee. In Sydney no one can hear you scream!
Featuring Mark Brady and Rohan Nichol. Directed by Brendon McDonall. Produced by James Lane. Designed by Joshua Mason. Lighting design by Luiz Pampolha.
