An absurdly funny and surreal investigation into the attempted 1962 Sydney tour of American 'sick' comedian Lenny Bruce. World Premiere. Trapped in Kings Cross, banned after his first late show, crucified by the media and harassed by the Sydney Vice Squad, pioneering US hipster comedian Lenny Bruce spent 13 days in Sydney searching for jazz, companionship and a stage. In this jazz-scored comic surrealisation for the stage Di Fonzo loosely adapts the book Lenny Bruce: 13 Days in Sydney by Damian Kringas into a vaudevillian mash-up of stand-up, documentary and jazz. The work resuscitates 60's Sydney and all the major players; Lee Gordon, Peter Cook, Frank Sinatra, Lenny Bruce (both dead and alive) and a cavalcade of 60's Kings Cross identities. A follow on to his Indie Hit The Chronic Ills of Robert Zimmerman, AKA Bob Dylan (A Lie) Benito invites us to spend an evening with Lenny Bruce, the hipster that forever altered comedy. "Writer, Benito Di Fonzo is my new instant, personal superhero." Lloyd Bradford Syke, Australian Stage PRODUCTION CREDITSDirector: Scott Croll |
