The Actor's Lab

The major aim of The Actor’s Lab is to introduce students to a more truthful and personal process of work for the actor. Students will begin to move away from just “acting” a part, to starting to explore actually creating the reality of their characters and feeling more honestly & truth in their scenes. By applying specific methodologies we aim to have students experience working organically & on impulse, without relying on acting “tricks” or conventions to make them appear truthful, but rather to explore the truth of their scene and their character within themselves. Students will begin to explore their personal blocks in a safe and nurturing environment, as well as experience ways of working more freely and openly in their acting work. The height of this experience for the actor is realised when they are no longer “acting” a role, but begin “being” in the role. Open to graduates of 'The Play' or similar courses elsewhere.

Focus - Identifying blocks
- Connecting to a scene partner
- Working from feelings rather than playing actions
- Working from an affected body
- Personal preparation
- Working organically
- Creating characters from source
- Rehearsal skills
- Pre-performance preparation

Outcome The class performs scenes taken from plays to an invited audience on our theatre stage.
