Playwright, Mary Anne Butler
BROKEN by Mary Anne Butler is the first drama to win one of the most prestigious and sought after writers’ awards in Australia, the Victorian Premier’s Award for literature.
In 2016, Darwin based writer Mary Anne Butler won both the drama and literature prizes with her play Broken. Darlinghurst Theatre Company is producing its Sydney premiere and first staging outside of the Northern Territory and bringing the bush to Darlinghurst."
Stunning in its lyricism and truths about life and love, Broken is provocative storytelling at its best.
Renown Australian writer Andrew Bovell said of Broken: "This is exquisite writing. It's immediate. It's lean. It's poetic. It's visceral. It takes you right into the heart of the experiences it describes."
Broken is a haunting story of resilience and hope that taps straight into the heart of the Australian landscape. The play begins with a near fatal car crash on an isolated road in the Central Desert. Ash is trapped in her car and is rescued by a stranger and in that moment of life and death a bond is formed and worlds collide.
Directed by leading director Shannon Murphy and featuring performers Ivan Donato, Sarah Enright and Rarriwuy Hick.
