Darlinghurst Theatre Company is honouring the memory of the late Nick Enright by presenting a series of works by Enright to audiences at Eternity Playhouse.
Over the next three years, the Enright family is supporting us to produce three plays by the renowned Australian playwright: Daylight Saving in 2014, Good Works in 2015 and A Man with Five Children in 2016.
In a special event in December 2013 attended by many of Nick’s friends and colleagues, we also named the beautiful new foyer bar at Eternity Playhouse “Nick's Bar" in honour of Enright.
As well as being a leading Australian writer, Nick Enright was much loved within the theatre community. He was a mentor to many professional theatre artists, including at our old theatre in Potts Point. Darlinghurst and its theatres were also an important part of his life, work and legacy, so we are thrilled to be taking a lead in the development, performance and promotion of Enright’s works.
Enright, who died in 2003 at age 52 of a melanoma, was a dearly loved man of the theatre. He was an actor, director, and teacher, as well as a prolific and influential writer for film, television, radio and the stage. His playwriting credits include Daylight Saving (1989) and Cloud Street (1998), which was based on the award-winning novel by Tim Winton. He also wrote the book for many musicals including Variations (1982), The Venetian Twins (1979) and Broadway hit, The Boy from Oz (1998). Nick co-wrote the screenplay for Lorenzo’s Oil (1993), which earned him an Academy Award nomination. Nick was the Head of Acting at NIDA between 1983 and 1984, and was also a mentor and teacher to many in the industry throughout his life.
Darlinghurst Theatre Company presented Daylight Saving in 2014 and is thrilled to present Good Works as part of the 2015 season and A Man with Five Children in 2016. We are also collaborating with the Enright family on a number of other special events.
